About Wine & Gourmet Taipei

In 1987, Taiwan first opened its doors to wine and other alcohol imports. In a matter of no time, the world’s leading wineries, distilleries, and breweries were grappling over what was soon to become one of Asia’s most dynamic markets . Today, Taiwan is the fifth largest wine importer in Asia, and its top imports come from France, Chile, Spain, Australia, and the US. According to Internatioanl Wine and Spirit Research (IWSR), wine consumption in Taiwan will reach 15.2 million liters in 2011, with sales climbing to 185 million US dollars. In 2010, wine sales rose by an astonishing 36.81%, illustrating the unrelenting thirst of Taiwanese consumers.

Wine in Taiwan was once considered beyond the means of average citizens and left an exorbitant impression in the minds of Taiwanese consumers. However, with rising living standards and increasingly cosmopolitan society, Taiwanese have become avid wine consumers. Robust wine demand has broadened the range of wines available to Taiwanese consumers and simultaneously increased the variety of outlets where wine can be purchased. An increasing number of higher-end wines can be found in wine cellars throughout Taiwan, as affluent consumers have developed a palate for fine wines. Young urban professionals and women are becoming increasingly important in the Taiwan wine market, providing solid opportunities for growth. IWAR further forests per capit wine consumption in Taiwan to increase to 0.9 liters next year, up from 0.7 liters in 2006.
